Atletico Boys U16 Win State Cup
The Atletico Madrid USA U16 boys club soccer team won the CalSouth State Cup tournament on Sunday, April 23, over the Inland Empire Strikers, winning 4-3 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw. Mike Moore scored a tying header goal off a corner kick from Mike Connelly. Keeper Cameron Venancio stopped two overtime penalty kicks, while Javier Renteria, Marco Valdez, Kean McCabe, and Mike Connelly all converted their PKs.
The semi-final victory over Santa Clarita United was won off an early goal from Ryan Hromyak, and a goal in the 81st minute by Marco Jimenez off a Paul Winninghoff assist.
Madrid won the quarterfinals 4-0 over SMUTD Scorpions with 2 goals from George Elliott, and goals by Dane Lindgren and Mike Connelly.
The defense was led by sweeper Eric Parker, allowing only 4 goals over the 7 game tournament.
Overall, Atletico Madrid went 6-0-1 in the 2 weekend tournament. 47 teams competed in this major southern California tournament. This victory marks the end of Madrid’s 2005-2006 season. They finished with a season record of 24-4-5, winning all 4 of the tournaments it entered during the season.
The San Luis Obispo based team is comprised of players from 7 area high schools, residing from Guadalupe to Paso Robles.
