Why should I play for Madrid?

This is a question that we have been asked over and over again. The beauty of club soccer on the Central Coast or anywhere in California is that each player should have choices. Madrid, SLO Fire, SMISO, Condors or SBSC.

What situation is ideal for you and your family?
Madrid coaches have been accused of "recruiting" players by local central coast clubs for several years. Our thought process is different. Is it bad to give a parent or player a choice? What if they never even knew what choice they actually had?

How can Madrid recruit a player if what we have to offer is this:
  • Increased Cost (depends on what team you play for)
  • More travel (games and practices)
  • Year round commitment to soccer
Madrid offers very few scholarships and the ones that are offered never reach the 100% level. This is because we want our players and parents to feel involved through a sense of ownership. Madrid, based on its vision to be the "San Diego Surf" of the Central Coast, has training / coaching requirements that won't allow a novice coach to train or coach teams thus creating the term "professional coaching".

Increased Cost: Usually comes from the hiring of a professional trainer.
  • Has your child ever had a professional coach?
  • Has your child ever been taught soccer by somone who played or is licensed at a high level?
Each team within Madrid is assigned a professional trainer or coach who meets the clubs training requirements. Furthermore, the coach must have "soccer skills" advanced enough to demonstrate technique at a high level and must posses an ability to communicate to children.

More Travel: Usually means that Madrid teams participate in more competitive tournaments state wide and regionally.

Each Madrid "Premier" team participates in Southern California's Coast Soccer League (considered the most competitive playing circuit in the United States). Madrid Premier teams have league home games in Santa Barbara and can play a normal league game as far south as San Juan Capastrano. Madrid Premier teams participate in Cal South, Cal North and US Club sanctioned tournaments. Once the teams reach the appropriate age groups they strive for acceptance into college showcase tournaments such as Nomads, Surf Cup, Eclipse College Showcase, Las Vegas College Showcase and the Toyota College Showcase. The reason for more travel is to expose the kids on the Central Coast to the "best" soccer has to offer.

In order to play against clubs such as: FC Barcelona, San Diego Surf, Nomads, FC Bratz, Arsenal FC, Slammers, Irvine Strikers, SDSC Pegasus, West Coast FC, Eagles FC, LAFC, Wolfpack, OJSC Barcelona and CRSC Infinity, Honolulu Bulls (HI), Sereno White (AZ), Las Vegas Tabigators (LV), YOU MUST TRAVEL!!!! as they usually don't play in tournaments North of Ventura. That is a simple fact! If you don't play against clubs at that level than you might not have ever seen what the "best" is. It is our feeling that you must not just see these teams ... you must search them out and play against them, win or lose, as much as possible. It is our feeling that by traveling to play these teams, we expose our kids to a level of soccer and speed of play that we just don't see much of North of Ventura.

Madrid Premier teams do participate in local tournaments as well to relieve some of the travel stress. Various Madrid Premier teams participate in SLO North v.s. South, Condors Classic and the SMISO Soccer Fest. It must be noted that all local tournaments are starting to draw better teams!

Madrid "Black" teams participate in local Central Coast Soccer League. Madrid "Black" teams are considered more developmental than the "Premier" teams. However, Madrid "Black" teams do strive to get better at soccer by playing against better competition down South. The focus on Madrid "Black" teams is to generate an interest in soccer and provide more kids an opportunity to play. Madrid "Black" teams are provided a professional trainer or coach who meets the clubs coaching requirements.

Year Round Commitment to Soccer:
Madrid players are encouraged to excel in the sport of soccer. This does not mean that Madrid kids are not allowed to play any other sports. Madrid has several athletes that participate in volleyball, basketball, tennis, track, cross-country and dance.

Madrid players are able to make any decision they want in regard to what sports they play. Our feeling is this ... if you play 3 sports you can / might be good at all three. However, if you play one sport you could be great (simply by more focused practiced time at specific skill sets). If a player selects to participate in several sports and take away from soccer, they run the risk of being passed up by players who select soccer "year round". That is a decision they make on their own. Madrid players are expected to attend all team training sessions for their specific team even if they are participating in other sports.

Conclusion:
Madrid Soccer Club is not trying to say that all other Central Coast clubs are a bad choice. Each club on the Central Coast does do good things for soccer and our local kids. Each club on the Central Coast has trainers and operates in their own way. Each family that participates in any local club is doing so because they have a set of choices to make.

Madrid is not for everyone! Madrid is for someone who is looking for exactly what we provide. This write up is to express to anyone who has questions... what the "MADRID WAY" is.

Madrids' Mission Statement:
Madrid Premier will provide players on the Central Coast with professional level training and the highest possible playing environments with the purpose to develop the skills necessary to play at soccer's highest levels.

Madrid's Vision:
To become the "San Diego Surf" of the Central Coast.

Everything that Madrid does in regard to the development of soccer players must fit inside the clubs mission statement and vision!
